Joan is an Infectious Diseases Physician with an interest in vaccines and vaccinations as well as Travel Medicine. She is a medical advisor with the Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) at the University of Auckland and recently retired from her position as an Infectious Diseases Physician at Te Toka Tumai (Auckland City Hospital). Her passion is the prevention of ill health with vaccinations and supporting those who do the mahi by providing information and supportive advice.

Hot Topics Update: Vaccines for Older Adults
Older adults have elevated risks and increased severity of multiple vaccine preventable diseases including COVID-19, influenza and pneumococcal disease. This talk will discuss immunosenescence and the implications for vaccinations; the importance of influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal, RSV and shingles immunisations for this population and new and future vaccines indicated for older adults. Healthcare worker recommendation is an important factor in ensuring acceptance and uptake of vaccines and this talk will inspire you to recommend and promote immunisations to your patients.
