Dr Joanna Wang

Old Age Psychiatrist, Director of Advanced Training for Old Age Psychiatry for the Upper North Island, University of Auckland, NZ
Dr Jo Wang is an Old Age Psychiatrist working with the Dementia Prevention Research Clinic at the Centre for Brain Research, University of Auckland. This is longitudinal study of MCI and Alzheimer’s disease. She has been part of the CPT NZ team (Caring for People with Dementia Together). This is a team of health professional with Chinese heritage looking to improve outcomes and quality of life for Chinese people living with dementia as well as for their family/ carers. Jo’s research interests include improving dementia care for people living with dementia, driving and cognitive impairment, capacity assessment and medical education.

Culturally Competent Dementia Care: Supporting Diverse Communities:

​A Chinese Perspective


​This presentation aims to provide a broad view of dementia care for Chinese people living in New Zealand. Main themes of the presentation include challenges with cultural identity, health literacy and the disconnect between needs within the community and current service provision. The talk will briefly cover some research around Chinese views of dementia care and touch on challenges with cross cultural capacity assessment and how that fits with our current guardianship legislation.
