Dr Menzies is a Geriatrician, General Physician, and Prevocational Education Supervisor at Te Toka Tumai Auckland, where he has worked since 2011. He has a strong interest in Māori health and is committed to improving outcomes for older Māori. He was part of the team that developed the MANA cognitive tool, a culturally grounded assessment for Māori, and is currently involved in a national prevalence study on mate wareware (dementia) in Māori. He also collaborates on a broader multi-ethnic study of dementia prevalence across Aotearoa New Zealand. He is interested in mate wareware assessment for Māori, the translation of research on dementia prevalence into prevention activities for Māori, and optimising services for older Māori.

Mate Wareware (Dementia): Supporting Assessment And Care For Māori
This presentation will discuss cognitive assessment for Māori with reference to the MANA cognitive instrument (https://www.nzdementia.org/MANA), a validated cognitive assessment designed for Māori that incorporates tikanga and whānau-informed practice.
I will touch on some of the supports that are in place for Māori diagnosed with mate wareware (dementia) and their whānau. I will also discuss mate wareware dementia modifiable risk factor to better support reduction in risk for Māori, with reference to the risk factors identified in the 2024 report of the Lancet standing commission on Dementia prevention, intervention, and care.
